WORTLEY TOP FORGE MINIATURE RAILWAY
Wortley, Nr Sheffield, S.Yorkshire S35 7DN
Situated near the village of Thurgoland some 6 miles west of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, our railway forms the main focus of our activities. It has 589 metres, or 654 and a bit yards, of dual 7¼” and 5” gauge track, fully signalled (semaphore and colour light) with two stations, tunnel and all the normal facilities associated with an active model engineering and miniature railway society. The railway is owned by the Wortley Top Forge Model Engineers Society which is based at the historic industrial museum of Wortley Top Forge. A variety of trains are to be seen; steam, diesel and electric with most of them able to carry passengers around the beautiful and historically interesting site. Our railway is open on every Sunday afternoon between Easter and Bonfire night and visitors are welcome to ride on the trains, enjoy some light refreshments or just sit and enjoy the beautiful, peaceful surroundings and watch the trains go by. For the more enthusiastic visitors, we are always keen to welcome new members. Whether they just want to drive the trains, act as signalmen, or just sit and chat with like-minded enthusiasts it doesn't matter! Other members just enjoy painting, track maintenance, looking after the locos and rolling stock while some are keen to get more closely involved with all aspects of model engineering including loco building, lathe work, welding etc. Our members are always keen to pass on their own knowledge and skills to novices. Younger members are especially welcome and are essential for the future of the club as well as hobby in general. We have a portable track and this is used regularly to attend village galas and local fayres, especially in the Summer months. Keep an eye out for us at your local South Yorkshire village fete!
